The OceansThe Oceans
Children are naturally interested in this unit. There are several easy-to-run activities where students compare salt water to fresh water. If you have a stereo microscope you can guide children to view salt crystals as well as sand crystals from different beaches. Teach about intelligent ocean mammals. There are also great opportunities for projects that integrate science and art.
ChemistryChemistry
Appropriate for upper elementary and middle-school students. Activities use inexpensive materials from the grocery store. Experiments include the vinegar baking soda reaction, tarnish and rust experiments, and a large selection of acid-base activities. Children can learn how to run candy and food coloring chromatography experiments.
Solar SystemSolar System
A visually inspiring unit with spectacular NASA images that excite young learners. Children enjoy dropping rocks into a container full of flour and measuring the depth of the craters. There are several colorful bar graphs that can be assigned. Teachers of homeschool children can guide their students to create scale models of the solar system and to create giant rings of Saturn using rocks and ice.
PhasesPhases
The best book to teach about Solids, Liquids, and Gases. There are many meaningful activities that use simple materials such as liquid water, ice, and salt. Many of the experiments are inquiry based and explore the phase changes associated with melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation. Children love slime and it is not difficult to show them how to make it. Appropriate for primary and middle school children.
The CellThe Cell
A spectacular unit with awesome activities. Children love the ‘Eggcellent Experiment’ which teaches and models the processes of osmosis and diffusion. Home-school children can make saran wrap cells to visualize the cell membrane. Learn how to prepare cheek and onion cells with simple stains for viewing under the microscope. Appropriate for middle-school aged children.
Digestive SystemDigestive System
An excellent unit for middle school and high school students. It’s simple to use a graduated cylinder to demonstrate the amount of bile and digestive juices the body produces. There are enzyme activities that use lactase enzyme and proteases purchased at the grocery store. Learn how to test fruit juices for enzymes by running gelatin experiments.
ElectricityElectricity
The book and CD provide instructions, demonstrations, and activities to teach the fundamentals of electricity. Topics include circuits, insulators and conductors, batteries, current, and electromagnetism. Students learn how to make an electromagnet and a battery from lemon juice.
